Rooted in Ayurveda

What is Ayurveda?

The 5,000-year-old science of Ayurveda translates to the science or knowledge of Life. The term Ayurveda is derived from the Sanskrit words Ayur (life) and Veda (science or knowledge).

Ayurveda believes that the entire universe is composed of five elements: earth, water, fire, air and ether. These five elements form the three fundamental bio-energy known as doshas – Vata, Pita and Kalpha that regulates the human body. We each embody all three doshas, but one is typically more dominant that determines your body type.  It is important to know the body type so that you understand what your body needs to maintain good health. Ayurveda claim that adopting dosha-specific health rituals leads to balance and well-being. Here’s a general overview of each dosha.

Vata dosha is combination of air and ether. Generally described as cold, light, rough, dry, moving, and spacious. Person who is predominantly Vata is multitasker, quick learner, creative, kind-hearted, flexible, may have thin body and often feels cold & dry or racing thoughts. Anything that brings stability and grounding such as practicing grounding meditation, eat warming and hearty food, staying well-hydrated - will be helpful when Vata energy takes over.

Pitta dosha is linked to fire and water and described as hot, light, rapid, sharp, and oily. Pita dominants are people are intelligent, goal – oriented, strong leaders but sometimes they become impatient, aggressive and are prone to inflammation, sensitive to hot weather. Unsurprisingly, focusing on work-life balance, slowing down, practicing pranayama, taking cold showers, having light, cold and sweet food and avoiding heavy and spicy meals to avoid Pita imbalance.

Kapha dosha is based on earth and water. Its qualities are steady, stable, heavy, slow, cool and smooth. People with this dosha are happy, calm, caring, strong and being support system to others with strong bones and healthy immune system. An imbalance in Kapha dosha can lead to weight gain and person becoming shy, depressed, or jealous. When Kalpha is out of whack introduce regular exercise, mindful activities such as meditation and breathwork can do miracle along with warm and light food diet with some spices or heat.
